about

Welcome fellow listeners and breathers!

Inhale. Pause. Exhale. Pause. Repeat. Behold the simple act of breathing :) Now your ears can join in on the fun! “Breathe” is music originally written to accompany one’s yoga practice - it started simply, with the idea to create a series of diverse pieces, etudes, sketches, etc… all with a slow beat that you can breathe along to. These pieces shift and change at regular intervals, as one flows through changing yoga poses, and it will end in a peaceful Shavasana.

I was living/teaching/learning in Guatemala and only had an ‘ukulele, so by default, this would be ‘ukulele music. As the music developed, I experimented with arrangements and new (to me) compositional approaches - mostly developed out of necessity because I was layering an instrument that has such a limited range and timbre. Several of the longer pieces sort of took on a life of their own and I let them - it was all part of the flow of composition and recording that was happening in a very organic way as I made breathing and yoga part of my daily life.

After developing a couple of different ideas for Shavasana, I decided to break the album into 2 parts: “Breathe (Inhale)” and “Breathe (Exhale).” Each of these albums are set up to accompany a (roughly) 36 minute yoga practice: 30 minutes of yoga with a 6 minute Shavasana.

What started as a simple idea became a continuously interesting, fun and challenging project that I loved from start to finish. I learned so much about music (in general), arrangement, and composition by allowing myself to be open to what the music spoke to me - I did this by “listening and responding with peace” (which became one composition’s title) - this simple act allowed the music to transcend its original vision - which was very exciting, especially because it’s a very counterintuitive concept for me: in the past, I would have a vision and figure out how to realize that vision. As always, getting out of one’s comfort zone is how one is transformed and is free to explore a broader and richer world - a concept which applies as much to music as to life in general.

Yours truly,
Craig Duff
